Intra-Uterine Device (IUD) Insertions

Mirena, Kyleena, Copper IUD

IUDs are used for contraception, controlling heavy menstrual bleeding or as part of hormone replacement therapy during menopause. They are the most effective form of contraception and last up to 5 years before it needs to be replaced or removed.

IUDs are easily reversible, meaning once they are removed your baseline fertility is restored immediately.

Dr Cathy Tang provides services at Woodville South GP for IUD insertion, replacement and removal. All appointments are required to be booked with her.

The Process

An initial consult is required to discuss the IUD, suitability and organise any tests and/or swabs if required. The initial consult is 30 minutes. A prescription will be provided for you to purchase the IUD from the pharmacy to bring to your insertion consult.

The insertion consult will be 30-60 minutes and you may need to stay a further 15-20 minutes after for observation. It is important that you bring your IUD with you – we do not hold stock in the clinic. The timing of the insertion appointment will be planned around your menstrual cycle.

Please see our detailed guide on how to prepare for your IUD insertion.

A follow-up consult should be booked for 6 weeks after insertion of the IUD to perform an examination and discuss any concerns or questions you may have. This consultation may be up to 15 minutes in duration.
